BetQL has hit 62.7% of UConn bets all-time for a total return of $2,732 on $100 bets, and has hit 58% of Marquette over/under bets for a total return of $920, so I trust the model’s best bet even more than usual in this spot. Both Dan Hurley and Shaka Smart preach hard-nosed, tenacious team defense and while these are two of the most efficient offensive teams in the country, I expect this to be a chippy, physical Big East matchup between two programs in search of a big statement win. Both of these teams are solid, as evidenced by UConn’s No. 6 spot and Marquette’s No. 8 spot in KenPom’s rankings, so I wouldn’t be shocked if this comes down to a final possession.
As much as I would love to back UConn to cover this spread, I’ve got to go with Marquette here. Marquette is 16-7 ATS this season and has covered in four of the last five games on the road to bring its record to 7-2 ATS away from home this year. Meanwhile, UConn has only covered in three of its last 12 games and has failed to cover in four of the last six at home. And the Huskies already lost to Marquette this season, 82-76, as two-point favorites, so I like Marquette to cover this spread.
Rutgers is ranked in the top 25 because of its defense, which is the second-best in all of college basketball and the best in the Big Ten, according to KenPom. In the last two games, the Scarlet Knights held Michigan State and Minnesota each to just 55 points apiece and only allowed Penn State to put up 45 on them at the end of January. Indiana is coming off an emotional win, knocking off No. 1-ranked Purdue on Saturday and we all saw how well that worked for Duke last night being in a similar situation after beating rival UNC. After a strong first half against the Boilermakers, the Hoosiers' shooting cooled off quite a bit in the second half and I worry that might carry over to tonight’s game, especially against Rutgers’ defense. Take the under.
This line is moving toward UVa, but you can still grab -6.5 at FanDuel. Though Virginia hasn't been strong at covering this season as a favorite (6-10-1) or even at home (4-7), I think this line will settle higher than this, so TBD whether the Cavs can cover the closing line. BetQL also backs up UVa here, noting that Tony Bennett is 25-11 ATS in home games with a total between 130-139.5 (135.5 as of this writing) and 36-19 ATS after a loss by six points or fewer while coaching Virginia.
